Nipomo Pipeline Vote Nears Conclusion

NIPOMO – After two months, voting for the proposed $26 million Nipomo Mesa supplemental water pipeline is nearing a conclusion. Balloting will end on Wednesday, May 3rd, with results set to be announced on Thursday, May 4th.

Hanging in the balance is a decision some say is perhaps the most important decision in the history of the south San Luis Obispo County community.

"It will affect the economy of the Mesa for next 30 years. It is extremely important. It is a very critical moment in our history," said Pat Eby, a member of the Mesa Community Alliance and an opponent of the proposal.

Michael LeBrun, General Manager of the Nipomo Community Services District, which supports the pipeline, agrees. "This is the most important vote and most important milestone in this community going back 20 years."

Eby says she is against the pipeline for a variety of reasons. "I feel it will drain way too much money away from the mesa. Those people who are customers of water purveyors are the only ones paying for it and that's only 45% of the people who live on the Mesa."

She also worries about the cost of water, which is likely to increase."The pipeline is cheap, they have never released the cost of water, they don't want to talk about the cost of the water, but state water in Santa Maria is very expensive."

LeBrun acknowledges rates will indeed go up if the pipeline, which would tie Into Santa Maria's water supply, is approved. However, he says those increases are necessary. "The big cost of water is delivery, movement. Supplemental water, a fraction of it will be coming from northern California and the cost of moving that water down here is borne again here by the users."

While some in opposition counter other proposals to supplement Nipomo's water supply are more attractive and less expensive, the NCSD believes the pipeline is best fit to serve the community."There's no other opportunities or options for supplemental water that have anything near that timeline," said LeBrun, referring to the fact the pipeline would start construction as soon as this September if approved.

Property owners who have not yet sent in their ballot can do so up until Wednesday, May 3rd. [correction May 9th 1PM] Voters who has already sent in their ballot, but have since changed their decision, can switch their vote as well.
